If these tubes are not fully fused then such a situation arises. In some cases, fusion of the tubes can occur at the mouth of the uterus (called the cervix), causing a bulge of the uterus. However, if the fusion fails there, a woman can develop two cervical and two vaginal detachments in some cases.”

Emphasizing that “the reason why the tubes are not fused properly is still unclear,” Dr Singh said that “genetic predisposition is the most likely cause of the discrepancy.” He further explained that environmental factors, which can mutate the gene, can also cause the development of double uterus in some women.

Experts believe that usually women do not have any problem due to which they are sometimes not even aware of their condition. Although “regular pelvic checkups, ultrasound and MRI,” are commonly used to diagnose double uterus, Dr Rastogi said.
Talking about the treatment, experts said that most of the women do not require any kind of treatment for it. Dr Rastogi said, “If someone is having recurrent miscarriages, then surgery can be considered.” He added that “surgery is difficult to perform if the two cavities in the pelvis are kept wide enough, but if they are close enough it can be done.”
