Dozens of ways to keep your nails strong and healthy this winter

Mike SternJanuary 8, 2023

The winter season can wreak havoc on your nails. Make sure to follow nail-care hacks in winter to get strong and healthy nails.

Who doesn’t yearn for long, healthy nails all year round, but especially in winters when your hands are completely covered and your nails are the only thing left to add glam.

Winter Nail Care Secrets

Let us look at some quick tips to take good care of your nails in winters.

  • Never leave your nails exposed. When your nails have a coat of armor namely base coat, polish and top coat, they are protected from water. They are also less likely to break and chip because they are safer. Always protect your nails with polish. A naked nail is a sad nail.
  • Take 1 tbsp each of almond and castor oil, add some hand cream to it and now soak your nails in it for about 15-20 minutes. Take out your hands and massage the mixture into your hands. This will also nourish and moisturise your nails and hands.
  • Like everything, our nails tend to lose a lot of moisture in the winter season when the temperature starts to drop. Hence nails can become dry and brittle due to lack of moisture. Hence, keep your hands, fingers and nails moisturized during the cold season to prevent moisture loss and prevent your nails from chipping, peeling and cracking. Use a good hand cream and keep in mind that apply a layer of that cream on each nail and massage well.
  • Humidifiers work wonders for turning dry, cold air into warm, moist air. The warm, moist air doesn’t suck the life out of your skin, hair and nails. A drugstore humidifier works fine, and if you don’t have one (and don’t want to buy one) you can boil a pot of water on the stove for at least some moisture.
  • It’s common to try to cut cuticles, push back, or get rid of them altogether, but cuticles are not the enemy. In fact, the cuticle is the natural protective seal of the nail. Moisturizing the cuticles with cream or oil helps protect and strengthen your nails.
  • Wear gloves when working with your hands for better nail care. When you wear gloves, you protect your nails from drying out as well as keep dirt away from your nails. By doing this you can protect your nails from breakage and cold weather.
  • With the lotion you’re applying now, you may find that your polish is peeling off more, leaving little unprotected bits of nail behind. That’s because the oils in the lotion are disrupting your polish’s bond. Before you paint your nails, be sure to clean them with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover. You’ll be removing the surface oil, but you’ll be getting off the oils that have been absorbed into your nail, which is what counts. And always start with a base coat and finish with a top coat. It protects your nails and seals in your polish.
  • Since you’ll be wearing gloves whenever you go outside, plus you’ll be wearing more scarves and sweaters, it’s especially important that your nails are free of ridges and crevices. Most of the nicks and cracks that lead to tears, snags or breaks are ones you can’t even see. Filing them gently two to three times per week will ensure that those edges stay smooth. It’s more important to save your existing nails and add new length than to listen.
  • It is really important to have a good diet to give your nails the strength to survive the winter season. Walnuts, chickpeas, dark green leafy vegetables and avocado strengthen nails.
  • Manicure once in a fortnight is very important to look beautiful. But before every manicure remember to soak your hands in some warm olive oil for 5 minutes.
  • Cracking and chipping of nails is common in winters. Take a packet of gelatin, add 2 tablespoons of it to a glass of water and drink it regularly to make nails stronger.
  • Tap your fingernail lightly on a hard surface, but not too hard.
