From Ghee to Sour Foods and Cooked Meat: How You Should Store Foods According to Ayurveda

Mike SternOctober 28, 2022

Dr Anshu Vatsyan, Sanjeevani Ayurvedshala, Ludhiana earlier told indianexpress.com, one should always consume freshly prepared food as it “not only tastes better but is also good for health.” The expert further added that “consumption of fresh foods will not only improve your fitness but overall health in the long term.” As such, one should always cook the right amount of food. Avoid wastage and storage hassle trash, However, it is easier said than done and we often find ourselves filling up with extra food in the fridge. But, did you know that Ayurveda has specific guidelines for storing food? Don’t worry, we are here to help you.

Ayurveda expert Dr Var Yanamandra wrote on Instagram, “Long before modern food storage solutions like fridges existed, Ayurvedic sages described how we could store food to keep it fresh.” Utensil need to be used to store leftover food” to prevent it from spoiling.

Take a look at what Dr. Yanamandra suggested:

,Juices, Cold Drinks and Syrups Should be stored in silverware as they have a cold nature which keeps the liquid fresh for longer. Agreeing, Dr. Goel shared that “silver utensils are 100 percent bacteria free and also retain the freshness of the things stored in it. It also does not react to acidic foods.”

,Ghee Always keep it in an iron vessel or jar.

,sour foods such as sauces and cooked buttermilk Should be stored in stone utensils as stone does not react with sour foods unlike metals. Garima further suggested that “Never keep sour food items in an iron vessel.”

,wine, syrup and Pickle Ideally should be stored in utensils made of glass, rock or crystal.

, cooked meat Always keep it in a silver vessel.

,Fruits and Snacks Must be wrapped in fresh leaves before being stored for later consumption.

,Water Keeping it in copper, silver, brass and earthen utensils is good for health. To this, Dr Goyal said, “Silver, brass and copper have anti-microbial properties and protect the body from waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery and hepatitis.”
