How oil pulling helped new mom Sonam Kapoor keep her teeth, gums healthy during pregnancy

What is oil pulling?

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, “oil pulling It is used to treat caries, oral odor, bleeding gums, dryness of throat, chapped lips and to strengthen teeth, gums and jaw. It is a simple daily regimen that, when done regularly, heightens the senses, brings a feeling of freshness and maintains clarity in the voice.

Oil pulling is traditionally done using cold pressed coconut oil, which has anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties, Lavleen Kaur, chief dietitian and founder, Diet Insight, a nutrition and wellness clinic, told indianexpress.com In earlier conversation.

“Other oils, such as sesame seed oil or sunflower oil, can also be used to help neutralize acid and eliminate plaque, resulting in improved overall oral health. Olive oil is another popular option because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Just one minute of slathering coconut oil in your mouth right after waking up will go a long way in killing bad bacteria, reduce bad breathprevent cavities, reduce inflammation and improve gum health,” she said.

Ayurvedic physician Dr. Ashutosh Nanal told indianexpress.com that oil pulling is “completely safe during pregnancy”. “Since the oil is swirled and spit out, it is completely fine. Simple oils like plain sesame oil can be a good option for oil pulling,” suggests Dr. Nanal.

How does swishing oil help?

Oil is a medium that “dissolves many settled particles, microscopic deposits and materials in the oral cavity,” Dr Nanal said. “Oil also helps loosen such deposits and dissolves them with the oil that you keep in the mouth. The oil also heals the microscopic structures and tissues in the oral cavity,” explains Dr Nanal.
