A 24 year old (female) was feeling unwell for past 6 months, often tired, fatigued and breathless on doing any activity. His stomach felt bloated and heavy. She was not paying attention to her health as her mind was preoccupied with the preparations for her marriage which was to be held in a month. Her menses were heavy and prolonged. She was avoiding seeing a doctor.
As she stepped out to do some shopping, she suddenly felt very dizzy, fainted and fainted. His relatives took him to the hospital and he was stabilised. When the doctors did a blood test, it was found that she was severely anaemic. His hemoglobin was 3, whereas normally it should be around 11. She was given multiple blood transfusions to increase her Hb, leaving the doctors wondering how she manages to go about her daily routine with such a low Hb. When further evaluated it was discovered that she had a large fibroid, the average size of an 8 month pregnant uterus. Her uterus had become the size of a watermelon due to fibroids. She was offered open surgery to remove the fibroids as they were very large in size.
However, she met Dr. Shweta.S. Through a referral to Kamath Rainbow Hospitals Hebbal. Dr. Shweta reassures him that he is in good hands. Fibroids can be removed laparoscopically through a small incision. Keyhole surgery will ensure that he has a faster recovery, less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, less chance of infection or hernia, and is more cosmetic.
She trusted the doctor and went ahead with the surgery. The procedure went smoothly and she was discharged in 2 days. Her recovery was rapid and it surprised her and her relatives alike, given that the fibroid weighed 2 kg. She was able to get married on the pre-determined date with full enthusiasm, happiness and was stress free.
Fibroids are common noncancerous tumors in the uterus. In most they do not cause any problems, in some it can cause heavy periods, painful periods, infertility repeated miscarriages, anemia or pressure effect on surrounding organs due to large size. These symptoms should not be ignored. Make an appointment with your gynecologist and make sure all is well.
