To understand more, we contacted experts to find out if it is safe to have henna or henna applied during pregnancy,

According to Deepti Khatuja, Head Clinical Nutritionist, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon, there is no harm in applying henna as long as it is chemical free. “If it’s pure, natural henna, it won’t have any side effects and can be applied safely. It’s only when it’s containing chemicals that’s likely to happen Allergies who may demand more medicines than the ones recommended during this time pregnancy, Which can cause problems in some women. But in case of any reaction, it is important to seek immediate medical care, not self-medicate,” Khatuja told me.indianexpress.com.

Essential oils are often combined with henna; Sharda M, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad said that one should be careful if the oil is suitable for pregnancy.

Dr. Aakriti Gupta, cosmetic dermatologist, Jivisha Clinic New Delhi concurred, and cautioned against the use of black henna. “It should not be used by pregnant mothers because it contains paraphenylenediamine (PPD), an unsafe dye, which can have serious adverse effects such as rashes, blisters, and allergic reactions. If you think you have a black henna tattoo and you have sudden pain or burning in your skin, consult a doctor immediately.

What precautions should pregnant women take before using henna?

According to Dr Gupta,

*Always read the packet before using any henna products or dyes to ensure you know the exact ingredients.

*Check the product carefully to be sure it is natural henna. If you are not sure whether the product is natural henna, please do not use it.

*Always do a patch test, even if it is a product you have used before.

*Bending over to apply henna products can be uncomfortable if you have a bump, If you feel dizzy or have trouble breathing, stop what you are doing.
*Although heat can darken the color of henna, don’t try to keep the room warm to wash out the color. Overheating can make you dizzy, and you may gain weight blood pressure,
