Taking selfies can affect your mental health: Here’s why:

Mike SternNovember 13, 2022November 30, 2022

“The overuse of mobile phones and social media has a serious impact on children’s mental health as well as developing problems such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even thoughts of suicide. ,” Gaurav Gupta, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, Tulsi Healthcare, New Delhi told IANS.

Sometimes, social media tends to promote negative experiences about one’s life and appearance, such as inadequacy.

negative effects of taking selfies

Selfie phones and selfie sticks are no longer just a convenience, but are considered the new epitome of self-absorption, with experts saying the selfie fever could further alienate this generation and those to come.

Behavioral experts divide selfies into three broad categories – those taken with friends, those taken during certain activities or events, and those that focus on physical appearance.

A study published in the journal psychology of popular media culturefound that people who posted a lot of selfies had higher levels of certain narcissistic traits, such as fragile self-esteem.

According to experts, we should be concerned about the nature and intensity of children’s digital interfaces. It’s not just about making a selfie or a video.

“It’s also about why you make a selfie and are you feeling conformity/peer pressure on social media, are you trying to imitate someone, are you losing your originality, or You are focusing on whether what you post is liked or not, you would lose track of the most important things in life, Sameer Parikh, Director, Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences, Fortis Healthcare told IANS. Huh.”

When it comes to video, that’s what happens. More importantly, the more digital interface you have, the more likely you are to move away from physical activity, social engagement, academics, sports and creativity.

“And then more and more of your time is spent indoors, in front of the mobile phone. So, it’s that aspect of the digital interface that’s a big concern. It’s your concentration abilities or a physical component or your social aspect. Will affect,” Parikh said.

Parents should encourage children to lead a balanced life and engage in physical activities and sports and meet friendsExperts advised.

Since the start of the pandemic, and even before that, India has seen a huge increase in the number of mobile phone users, especially children, increasing every year.

“The best way out of this problem for parents is to limit the amount of time their children spend on these electronic gadgets. Avoid giving phones to young or newborn babies to play games or watch videos, basically to distract them. Parents can also forbid children from using mobile phones till late at night which can sometimes lead to insomnia,” Gupta said.
