What is myasthenia gravis, the rare autoimmune disease Arun Bali was suffering from?

Veteran actor Arun Bali passed away at the age of 79 at around 4:20 am on Friday. Known for his memorable performances in TV shows. Self respect more popular movies 3 IdiotsHe was suffering from myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease According to his son Ankush, due to communication failure between nerves and muscles. “He was suffering from myasthenia gravis. His mood was swinging for two-three days. He told the caretaker that he wanted to go to the washroom and came out and said that he wanted to sit; He never woke up then,” she told PTI,

What is myasthenia gravis?

According to Krishnan PR, Consultant Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore, “It is a rare neuromuscular disease of autoimmune origin characterized by weakness of skeletal muscles – Muscles Used for the movement of the body. It occurs when communication between muscle and nerve cells is impaired due to certain deficiencies in chemicals.”

Agreed, Dr. Kadam Nagpal, Senior Consultant, Neurology, PSRI Hospital, said that myasthenia gravis can occur at any time – from infancy to late adulthood, “When it occurs during infancy, it is called congenital myasthenia gravis, and when it develops later, it is called acquired myasthenia gravis,” he said.

cause

Experts explain that the condition is caused by a defect in the action of acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter – at the neuromuscular junction. “Between a nerve and a muscle, there is a junction called the neuromuscular junction where the chemical acetylcholine acts as a facilitator molecule to enhance locomotion and muscle strength, It carries electrical impulses from the nerve and delivers it to the muscles,” Dr Nagpal said.

In myasthenia gravis, antibodies are developed against acetylcholine receptors. “When acetylcholine binds to a receptor and facilitates impulses, autoantibodies attack those receptors and result in neuromuscular weakness,” he said.

Symptoms

According to neurologists, some of the common symptoms of myasthenia gravis are given below.

*Difficulty speaking, chewing or swallowing
*Difficulty raising or extending your head
*trouble walking
,difficulty breathing

“Classic elements include fatigue and fluctuations. Patients become increasingly fatigued during the day and weakness fluctuates even during the day,” Dr. Nagpal said.

Who is at greater risk?

According to Dr Krishnan, while no one is at high risk, certain genetic markers can identify those at higher risk. “However, these are not commonly used,” he said.

Those who have a family history are at risk, Dr Nagpal clarified. “Although there is no direct transmission from member to member, they are certainly more vulnerable than the general population. It can also be seen in patients who may have some kind of distance cancer Inside the body as a paraneoplastic process. The most common process we see is thymic hyperplasia or thymoma in about 10 percent of cases. In this condition, either the thymus gland enlarges or some kind of cancer forms in that gland.

Redressal

Dr Krishnan highlighted that prevention of myasthenia gravis is not possible as the reason behind it is not fully known. “But, if someone is suffering from it, they can take some steps to avoid exacerbation,” he listed the following preventive measures after diagnosis.

* Treat infection promptly
*don’t overexert
*Learn to manage stress Better
*get enough sleep
*have a balanced diet

Dr Nagpal concluded, “Patients may have a stormy course initially, but in this disease, they can achieve remission with long-term treatment.”
