What is the difference between clinical egg freezing and social egg freezing?

Mike SternNovember 8, 2022

There are many treatments now available to improve the chances of conception for couples who are not able to do so naturally or are planning to delay their pregnancy due to various reasons. Among them are treatments that involve fertility drugs, hormonal drugs, or surgery, including in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Another method that can improve the fertility rate in women is ‘egg freezing’. Dr Sauran Bhattacharjee, Consultant, Birla Fertility and IVF says that many women choose to freeze their eggs between 20 and 30 years of age for a variety of reasons to enhance their biological cycle.

What is Clinical Egg Freezing?

According to the doctor, cryopreservation of eggs – scientifically called oocyte freezing – is a way to preserve fertility, in which eggs are frozen after they are removed from the ovaries.

“By freezing eggs one’s fertility or pregnancy options are increased. There are a large number of people who undergo egg freezing. This procedure is chosen by individuals for a variety of reasons, including medical and health conditions, and is preferred over things other than the parent in life,” says Dr Bhattacharjee, adding that frozen eggs can be used for up to 10 years after the procedure. are good for.

When is this done?

The doctor says that a woman can consider the method of egg freezing in the following cases:

1. If he is diagnosed with cancer and has to undergo treatment. Some cancer treatments, including chemotherapy or radiotherapy, can affect fertility. The pre-treatment egg freezing process helps in bearing biological babies later in life.

2. If the woman is undergoing IVF and her male partner does not produce the proper amount of sperm on the day the woman receives the egg, then the best option is egg freezing.

But, what is social egg freezing and how is it different?

Dr Bhattacharjee explains that social egg freezing refers to a woman’s fertility or egg freezing not for medical reasons, but for social reasons such as pursuing a career goal, waiting to find the right life partner or economic and emotional stability before starting a family. method of protection. ,

“The eggs can be retrieved at a later stage and used to induce pregnancy, offering the woman to have a biological child of her own at the time of her choice. Since age is an important factor in having a healthy baby, those who are considering social egg freezing should visit an IVF clinic to fully evaluate themselves and check if they are planning to postpone their pregnancy. deserves, ”says the doctor.

He adds that the pre-screening process includes simple blood tests, ultrasound scans and consultations.

“There are many myths about fertility. There is a misconception that babies born with frozen eggs are unhealthy – this is not true. The process of freezing your eggs does not require a partner or marriage. Believe that the success rate of social egg freezing will be the same at any age. The truth is that both the quality and quantity of eggs decrease with age; the procedure should be done at an early stage,” concluded the doctor.
