Dr Sameer Dani, Director, Cardiology Services, Apollo CVHF Heart Institute, Ahmedabad said that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the progression of complications arising from heart diseases, adding that if COVID-19 becomes endemic, it will can become a significant risk factor.
Speaking a day before World Heart Day on 29 September, Dr Dani said, “Based on what we have seen, people who already had coronary artery disease tend to have more complications with COVID-19. .. more heart failure, more heart attack and faster progression of blockages.”
Stating that people who did not already have heart diseases are also more likely to develop heart problems after getting Covid-19, Dani said, “We have seen three or four cases where Covid-19 10-20% blockage occurs before After Kovid, 90 percent blockage happened in six to eight months. If it becomes endemic, it will become important to take post-Covid precautions to prevent heart problems.”
